The Data Platform Architecture team in the Core Data Platform organization is responsible for architecture and design of the data on PayPal’s live site that strengthens the existing data platforms for our customers, improves the core experiences of our customers on these data platforms, and builds new data platforms for the future needs of our customers.

As a Data Architect on the Data Platform Architecture team you will be responsible for being a trusted partner with several of PayPal’s various business unit domain specific product engineering organizations to architect their data solutions that support their defined high priority business initiatives and be engaged in the design, development, and deployment in a DevOps model.

As such you will be embedded with the architects and technical data leads in these product engineering teams in a key architect specific role from their first sprint for conceptual and logical data modeling, physical data modeling, and involved in the design and review of the data structures as well as the code that will access it all the way through to their production deployment of the data.

You will collaborate with domain architects, data technical leads in the domain, as well as domain specific product engineering data developers to guide them on their data access patterns and together with them design the data structures to support these access patterns.

You will be designing end to end data solutions that include OLTP data stores (SQL data stores (such as Oracle and MySQL), NoSQL data stores (such as Aerospike, Couchbase, Cassandra, and others), messaging and data movement products (such as Kafka, ActiveMQ, and others), search engine products (such as Elastic Search, Splunk, Solr, and others), as well as OLAP data stores (such as Hadoop, Hbase, Teradata, and others). These end to end data solutions will be a mixture of some on premise, some in the cloud, and some a hybrid of both.

You will ensure these data architectures and data designs align with and comply with PayPal’s specific enterprise data architecture and design standards for each of the data stores.

You will design these data access patterns and associated data structures to ensure they meet both the functional business requirements of the business initiatives and also ensure they meet the essential system qualities (a.k.a. as the non-functional requirements) such as security, availability, performance, scalability.

Together with your fellow architects in the domains, you will be a customer champion who identifies opportunities to more efficiently and or effectively manage the data in the data platform in ways that reduce the data security risks, that make the data solution more fault tolerant, that enable the data to be horizontally scaled, and that improve the query performance to create an improved experience for our customers. Not only are these opportunities identified but you will drive these data platform improvements to be delivered.

Job Requirements

You will create and contribute regularly to PayPal’s specific enterprise data architecture and design standards for each of the supported data stores and do research and assessment on new offerings to the suite of supported products, both those available commercially off the shelf as well as those available from the cloud providers with whom PayPal has partnered.

Demonstrated experience and care for holding the customer’s interests in the fore front and good customer service success.

Experience and demonstrated ability to deliver ideas, concepts, and presentations to senior management and senior leadership teams.

Demonstrable track record supporting internal and external customers and working with cross-functional technical and non-technical teams to define requirements and follow systematic processes to architect strategic data platform solutions in the context of a mature devops processes.

Demonstrated ability to identify strategic problems and work collaboratively across a large organization to collectively solve them in ways that work well and are proven over time to be sustainable.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a Computer Science or related field with 10+ years of work experience in a technical role.

10+ years of experience in designing, building, supporting and troubleshooting the performance of highly scalable and available Products/Platforms on the Internet.
