PayPal’s Cloud PaaS team in Chennai is looking to hire a Technologist (Member of Technical Staff 1), with very strong technical background and hands-on experience in architecting/designing software products and leading software engineers in all aspects of software engineering and operations, to lead their Cluster Manager Platform as a Service (currently focused on offering Apache Mesos with aspirations to expand into Kubernetes and other cluster managers found fit). An ideal candidate would be someone who can beautifully transform a concept to a software product with long term technology strategy, good design, flawless execution and full technical ownership to operate the product or one or more of the product's sub-systems.

Candidate must have played the role of an Architect/Tech Lead with accountability on the technology strategy, architecture and design for the respective software product(s)/component(s) owned. Candidate must be very proficient in Java/J2EE technologies and have the required breadth and depth on a variety of software architectures, stacks and technologies to analyze, understand tradeoffs and to recommend the right design choices to make. Thorough understanding and hands-on experience of non-functional aspects such as Security, High Availability, Scalability, Disaster Recovery etc., is very essential to be successful in this job role.

Candidate with experience in Platform Engineering/Infrastructure Engineering with knowledge on Cloud platforms like GCP, OpenStack, AWS etc., and distributed systems like Docker, Apache Mesos, Apache Aurora, Apache ZooKeeper is highly preferred. Any form of prior experience with cluster managers like Mesos, Kubernetes, Swarm etc., is an added plus. The candidate must be a very seasoned technologist with the right attitude and aptitude to deal with day-to-day dynamics of changing priorities, geo-distributed dependencies, business urgencies and everything else that's part and parcel of leading and operating any large scale software product.

  • 12+ years of full cycle experience in building and operating software products/platforms

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in leading software engineers in building and operating software products/platforms

  • Strong in computer science fundamentals, data structures and design principles

  • Strong programming skills in Java/J2EE technologies

  • Strong knowledge in database technologies (NoSQL is a plus!) with expertise in data modeling, performance tuning and query optimization

  • Good knowledge of web technologies and UI frameworks – HTML, JavaScript, AJAX, AngularJS, Bootstrap etc.

  • Good experience working on UNIX based operating systems and shell scripting; Knowledge of Ansible, Puppet, Chef etc., is a plus

  • Must own and assume full accountability of the technology strategy, architecture and design of the respective software product(s)/component(s) owned

  • Must lead one or more smaller teams of software engineers with full onus to design, code, deliver and operate the software products/components owned

  • Must be detail-oriented and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with the ability to appropriately prioritize

  • Provide timely inputs, insights and influence Leadership in taking right technology/product decisions

  • A great team player who can work collaboratively within and outside the team

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills due to the dynamic nature of discussions within and outside the team

  • Arbitrate disagreements among engineers and drive decisions without impacting the team harmony

  • Mentor, coach and groom junior/peer engineers to mature team and maximize productivity
